QR code tipping: how it works and how to set it up
QR code tipping lets customers tip by card or phone wallet with no cash and no app. How it works, setup, real fee math, placement, safety and taxes.
A client loves the haircut. They open their wallet, find nothing, and say "sorry, no cash." That tip is gone. A QR code gets it back.
This guide is for anyone who earns tips in person, from barbers and valets to buskers and movers. It covers how QR code tipping works and what it really costs at the tip sizes you see every day. Then placement. Then safety and taxes.
What is QR code tipping?
QR code tipping is a way to take tips by card or phone wallet without a card reader. You show a printed or on-screen code. The customer scans it with the phone camera. A web page opens, they choose an amount, and they pay.
The code holds nothing but a web address. Everything that matters happens on the page it opens, so compare tipping services by their pages.
It also differs from a tip screen on a card terminal. Nobody turns a screen toward the customer. The code sits there, and people who want to tip use it.
How does it work for the customer?
From the customer's side, it takes five steps and no setup.
- They point the phone camera at your code. Current iPhones and Android phones read QR codes with the built-in camera.
- A link pops up. They tap it, and your tip page opens in the browser.
- They tap one of your preset amounts or type their own.
- They pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or a card.
- A confirmation shows on their screen, and the tip shows in your dashboard.
No app. No account. With a wallet already set up, it takes seconds.
Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover all work on tipme, including cards issued abroad. That matters near hotels and tourist streets, where a visitor may not have the payment apps Americans use. See Apple Pay, Google Pay and cards.
Why are tips moving off cash?
Fewer customers carry cash. The Federal Reserve's 2026 Diary of Consumer Payment Choice found cash made up 14% of US consumer payments in 2025, down from about a third in 2016. Only 76% of consumers carried any cash at all, the biggest one-year drop since 2018.
Small payments are where cash has held on longest. In the same diary, five of every six cash payments were under $25, which is tip territory. Cash was still about 20% of in-person payments. The age gap is wide, though. People 55 and older made 10 cash payments a month, against two for those aged 18 to 24.
Habits differ by age too. In Bankrate's 2025 survey, 25% of Gen Z said they always tip their barber or stylist, against 67% of Gen X.
Boston street performer Chadd "Wacky Chad" Deitz put it bluntly to NBC News in 2025: "If you don't accept digital payments, then you're not going to survive."
Be honest with yourself here. A 2022 study by Kakkar and Li found restaurant customers were more likely to tip when paying cash. A code won't beat a full jar. It catches the tips you'd lose from empty pockets. The research is in do QR codes increase tips?
How do you set up QR code tipping?
You need a tip page, its QR code and somewhere for the money to go. On tipme, setup looks like this.
- Sign up as an individual with your name, email and a US mobile number. No LLC or EIN.
- Verify your identity with your SSN or ITIN. Stripe runs the check.
- Create a tip page. Add a title, a message of up to 140 characters and your preset amounts. Customers can always enter their own amount.
- Pick who pays the processing fee for that page. The math is below.
- Download the QR code from the dashboard or the app. Print it, or show it full screen on your phone.
- Add a debit card or a bank account so you can withdraw.
The code and the link never change. Edit the message or the amounts next month and the printed code still works, so you print it once. More on sharing your page with a QR code.
How should you choose preset amounts?
Fit them to your price, because presets shape what people give. Haggag and Paci studied more than 13 million New York City taxi rides. Higher default tip options raised tips. They also raised the share of riders who left nothing.
Customers notice. Many dislike them. In a 2023 Pew Research Center survey, 40% of US adults opposed suggested tip amounts and 24% favored them.
Say you're a barber charging $30. Buttons of $3, $5 and $7 look normal. Put the same buttons under a $4 coffee and they feel pushy. Use dollar amounts, since a tip page has no bill to take a percentage of, and the custom field covers everyone else. See suggested tips and payment links.
How much does QR code tipping cost?
The code and the page are free. You pay a processing fee on each tip, and on tipme you choose per page who covers it. As of October 2026:
- The customer covers it: about 4.1% + $0.31 is added at checkout, and you receive the full tip.
- You cover it: 4% + $0.30 comes out of the tip.
There's no signup or monthly fee. Here's what that means at common tip sizes when you cover the fee.
| Tip | Fee you pay | You keep | Fee as share of tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| $2 | $0.38 | $1.62 | 19% |
| $5 | $0.50 | $4.50 | 10% |
| $10 | $0.70 | $9.30 | 7% |
| $20 | $1.10 | $18.90 | 5.5% |
See the pattern? The fixed 30 cents is what hurts small tips. That's one more reason to keep presets above pocket change, or to let the customer pay the fee. If they cover it on a $10 tip, they pay about $10.72 and you get the full $10.
Standard transfers to a bank account are free and take a few business days. Instant payouts reach a debit card in minutes for 1%, with a $0.50 minimum. Full rates are on the fees page.
How does that compare with other ways to take tips?
tipme isn't the cheapest. Not when you pay the fee yourself. Here are the rates from each company's own page, as of October 2026, next to what each one asks of you or your customer:
| Option | Rate | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| tipme tip page, you pay | 4% + $0.30 | The customer's phone camera and a card or wallet |
| Venmo business profile | 1.9% + $0.10 | The Venmo app and an account on the customer's side |
| Square Free, in person | 2.6% + 15¢ | A card reader on your side |
Say you get 40 tips a month averaging $8. Covering the fee on tipme costs you $24.80. On a Venmo business profile it would be about $10.08, but only customers with Venmo can pay. What tipme's higher rate buys is a page anyone can pay on, plus the option to pass the fee to the customer.
Where does QR code tipping work best?
It works best wherever a happy customer might have no cash and the service ends face to face. Strong spots:
- Barbers and stylists: the mirror, where the client looks during the final check.
- Private drivers: the back of the front headrest, at the passenger's eye level.
- Buskers: a sign beside the open case. Keep the case open for cash.
- Movers and cleaners: your phone screen as you walk the client through the work.
- Tour guides: a card held up at the last stop.
Placement changes results. Elkins and Fry studied QR tipping at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe. Scans and tips varied with the act, the time and the place, and with the signage and landing page. Hotels show the upside. Wyndham added QR tipping through the Béné platform and reported tip frequency up 14% per property (Hotel Dive, 2023). The average tip per employee rose 45%. That's the company's own figure, with no control group.
One bad spot: right next to a terminal that already asks for a tip. Our guide on where to put your tip QR code goes job by job.
How do you get more people to scan?
Make the code easy to notice and easy to ignore. That sounds odd, but customers are tired of being pushed. Bankrate's 2025 survey found 38% are annoyed by pre-entered tip screens, and 27% tip less or not at all when shown one.
A few habits help:
- Label it. "No cash? Scan to tip" beats a plain square.
- Show your name on the page. People want to know who they're paying. On tipme you can show or hide your profile.
- Mention it once, after the work. "There's a code here if you'd like to tip" is enough.
- Watch the numbers. Give two spots their own tip pages and see which earns more.
Is QR code tipping safe?
Yes, when the code is genuine. The real risk is a fake sticker placed over yours. The FBI warns that criminals tamper with physical codes this way, and in January 2026 WRAL reported fake "scan here to pay" stickers on Raleigh parking meters.
The FTC's advice to customers is to check the web address before paying through an unexpected code. Your part is simple. Look at your code at the start of each shift, run a finger over it for a second layer, and scan it to make sure your page opens.
A tipme code opens a page on tipme's own domain, showing your page title and, if you choose, your name and photo. Stripe processes every payment, so neither tipme nor you ever sees the card number. More in are QR code payments safe?
How are QR code tips taxed?
Like any other tips. The IRS says tips are subject to federal income tax and generally to Social Security and Medicare taxes, cash or card.
A federal deduction for qualified tips runs from 2025 through 2028, up to $25,000 a year. Final IRS rules from April 2026 list more than 70 occupations and confirm that tips paid by card or payment app can qualify. The limits are real, though. You need a Social Security number valid for employment, so ITIN filers can't claim it. Self-employed people in a "specified service trade or business" are excluded, and that includes performing arts. The deduction only touches federal income tax.
Digital tips leave a record. tipme sends a daily recap email on days you're paid, keeps your full history and exports it as CSV. You get a Form 1099-K once payments pass the federal threshold: more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions in a year. Some states set a lower one. The details are in digital tips and taxes in 2026. tipme gives no tax advice, so talk to a tax professional.
Frequently asked questions
Better not. Make a tip page for tips and a service page with a set price for the work, each with its own code and link. One tipme account holds up to 10 pages, and customers then know what they owe and what's optional.
Yes. Show the code full screen on your phone, or text the link after the job. In the tipme mobile app you can also use Tap to Pay, where the customer taps a card or phone against yours with no card reader.
Only if you ask for it. Turn on name and email collection for a page, and customers enter both before paying. Each tip in your history also shows which page it came through.
Nothing breaks. The code belongs to your page, not to the paper or the phone, so you download it again and print the same code your regulars know.
